ABEL & COLE: WHAT IS IT?

Abel & Cole have been pioneers in home delivery since 1988. They are now a full-fledged online shop offering sustainably sourced products, from seasonal fruit and veg boxes to eco-friendly household cleaning items and beauty products.

For more than 30 years they’ve delivered food and drink right to your door. You can subscribe to their seasonal fruit and veg boxes or customise your own, adding sustainably-sourced fish, organic and free-range meat, British-grown grains, and more.

Abel & Cole also offer a recycling service. The packaging your food arrives in is collected each week to be reused time and time again. Their Club Zero refill range offers staples like organic milk in returnable, refillable packaging, cutting down on single-use plastic. They even collect your hard-to-recycle flexi plastics wherever they come from (think sweet packets or plastic bags) through their Plastic Pick-Up doorstep recycling scheme and turn them into building materials.

So, whether you’re after the freshest seasonal veggies or eco-friendly household essentials, Abel & Cole delivers right to your doorstep.

ABEL & COLE: HOW SUSTAINABLE IS IT?

For over 30 years, Abel & Cole have championed organic farming. Their organic farmers are independently certified by bodies like the Soil Association and must meet strict organic production laws. It’s worth noting that they used to be exclusively organic but now include non-organic offerings, too, so it’s up to individual shoppers to select products that match their values.

Fair pricing is key for Abel & Cole, ensuring that their farmers can make a profit, reinvest in their farms and continue to grow. Every farm is unique, so Abel & Cole fosters tailored partnerships, working through challenges together. As a proud Living Wage employer, they’re committed to paying fair prices to farmers, enabling them to pay fair wages to their teams.

Abel & Cole sources as much as possible from UK growers and makers, reducing food miles and carbon emissions. For items that can’t be sourced locally, such as their organic bananas, they maintain a zero-airfreight policy.

Committed to reducing their carbon footprint, Abel & Cole was the first organic food delivery company to join the UN’s Climate Neutral Now Initiative in 2021, achieving the Carbon Neutral International Standard. They’ve also begun to introduce electrical delivery vans into their fleet. Their delivery model is designed to minimise food miles and carbon emissions by delivering to specific areas on set days and avoiding peak traffic times. Their yellow vans are specially designed to carry more than average, allowing for more deliveries per journey.

Abel & Cole’s Packaging Promise aims to reduce waste with zero pointless plastic. They only use packaging that serves a genuine purpose, like preventing food waste. When plastic is used, it’s designed with sustainability experts to ensure it can be reused, recycled or returned to Abel & Cole.

All suppliers adhere to Abel & Cole’s welfare policy and grazing access requirements, with outdoor access for livestock averaging around 180 days a year.

To minimise food waste, Abel & Cole collaborates with WRAP and employs a dedicated Food Guardian who works with charities like City Harvest and The Felix Project to ensure that any unsold food finds a good home. Through their One Box: One Portion initiative, they donate a portion of fresh, organic produce to those in need for every Fruit & Veg Box sold.
