Fritton Lake: What is it?

Fritton Lake offers the chance to truly escape and enjoy the beauty of the UK landscape. Set on a stunning two-mile-long lake on the Norfolk and Suffolk border, and within an 1,000 acre rewilding project, guests are invited to slow down, reconnect with nature, and explore how biodiversity and regenerative farming can thrive together.

Whether you are swimming in the wild lake at sunrise, relaxing in the floating sauna, or unwinding in a design-led woodland cabin, the experience is both grounding and indulgent. Nature safaris by jeep, boat, or paddleboard, and endless trails to walk, give guests a front row seat to the estate’s ecological restoration in action. While an outdoor heated pool, lakeside gym, yoga and pilates classes, tennis courts, water sports provide the opportunity to make the most of leisure time, however that looks for you.

Families will find plenty of room to roam. Children can adventure through ancient woodland, bounce on the pillow in the play area, zip through the trees, or slide down the giant slide. Whether joining a nature walk or paddling with their grownups, children are encouraged to explore, learn, and play.

Dining at Fritton Lake is a celebration of seasonal and estate grown ingredients. Meals are served at the Clubhouse and made using produce grown on site or sourced from trusted local suppliers. For those who prefer to cook or dine privately, food boxes featuring local wine, fresh vegetables, preserves, and more can be delivered directly to your retreat.

Fritton Lake offers a variety of stays, including cozy farm cottages, boutique cabins, hotel style Clubhouse rooms, and specially selected hideaways curated by the team.

Fritton Lake is a rare place where thoughtful design, sustainability, and true relaxation meet.

Fritton Lake: How Sustainable is it?

Sustainability is at the heart of Fritton Lake. Founders Hugh and Lara Somerleyton have spent years nurturing a vision that puts nature first while offering a truly memorable stay. “Starting with our thousand acre rewilding project, we have worked hard to restore balance on the land and encourage biodiversity,” says Hugh. “Fritton Lake’s natural beauty is not only a sanctuary for wildlife but also the perfect place to escape the pace of modern life.”

Since 2017, former farmland has been carefully restored and is now home to free-roaming deer, ponies, sheep and cattle. Wild grasses are left to grow, birds and insects are thriving, and, they say, the air feels noticeably different.

Their pool is heated using air source technology and the Bio Gym uses human-powered equipment. The food served at the Clubhouse is either foraged or seasonally sourced from the estate itself or their five thousand acre regenerative farm, which aims to give more back to the soil than it takes.

Fritton Lake is proud to be part of WildEast, the charitable movement Hugh helped to found, with the goal of returning two hundred and fifty thousand hectares of land in East Anglia to nature. The aim is to inspire people to dedicate at least 20% of their land to wild growth. That means no mowing, no pruning, just space for long grass, dandelions, bugs, birds and mammals to thrive.

As Lara puts it: “We want people to come here, breathe deeply, and see how joyful it is to be surrounded by nature doing its thing. It is good for the land and good for the soul.”

Rewilding here is more than just about the land – it’s about rewilding the way people think, move and eat. Guests are encouraged to learn and reconnect. The rewilding team welcomes questions and is happy to show people around.

Fritton Lake continues to work closely with its suppliers to minimise waste and plastic packaging. They pay all their workers a living wage and support local producers whenever possible.

It is this commitment to thoughtful choices that makes a stay here so memorable. From the food to the views to the fresh air, everything has been created to care for both people and the planet.
