Tŷ Cwch: What is it?
Designed with a spirit of adventure, Tŷ Cwch Boathouse is a one-of-a-kind, award-winning bunkhouse just metres from the sea on the Cardigan Heritage Coast. Located in the peaceful cove of Cwmtydu, this sustainably built retreat offers affordable, catered or self-catering accommodation for up to 12 people, set among one of the most biodiverse stretches of the Welsh coast.
Tŷ Cwch is made up of three cosy, heated sleeping pods and three fully equipped ground-floor pods that house the kitchen, sitting, dining, and utility areas. These open onto a covered deck with seating, heaters, and BBQs, blending indoor comfort with outdoor living. From launching kayaks and spotting seals to enjoying coastal walks and stargazing from a hammock, guests can immerse themselves in nature while enjoying flexible and functional facilities.
Perfect for groups, families or solo travellers, Tŷ Cwch is situated on the Wales Coast Path between Llangrannog and New Quay, surrounded by rugged cliffs, secluded beaches, and a rich array of local wildlife, including Europe’s largest population of bottlenose dolphins. With its communal feel and coastal charm, it’s a place to slow down, reconnect, and explore.

Tŷ Cwch: How Sustainable is it?
Sustainability is at the heart of Tŷ Cwch’s design and operation. Designed by architect Nigel Humphrey, who specialises in energy efficiency and sustainability, careful thought went into every element.
It is a boathouse made from shipping containers, which minimised the energy used for construction. The internal spaces are created using recycled and local materials as far as possible, again reducing the impact of the accommodation. Plus, it is extremely energy efficient because not only is it powered by 100% renewable energy, with lighting all LED and appliances all rated A+, but also the clever layout means the heated inhabitable areas are kept to a minimum. Arguably, Tŷ Cwch is Zero Carbon in use.
Moreover, the boathouse was developed without displacing existing dwellings. It aims to build resilience for the environment, the community, and for future generations with commitment to composting, local sourcing, and low-impact visitor numbers. Guests are encouraged to explore the area mindfully, support local businesses, and embrace a slower, more conscious way of travelling.
This community spirit is the heart of Tŷ Cwch. The boathouse is designed to encourage interaction, with common areas such as the kitchen and lounge offering guests the opportunity to socialise.
With nature right on the doorstep, including seal pups on the beach, the boathouse provides resources and inspiration for guests to connect with the land and sea. They partner with outdoor instructors to help guests craft custom experiences, from paddleboarding and kayaking to wildlife walks and discovery courses.
As such, it’s no surprise that Tŷ Cwch has been awarded Gold by Green Tourism for its commitment to sustainability.
Tŷ Cwch is also family-run and proudly independent. Nigel and Christine, the owners, live nearby and are deeply involved in the day-to-day running of the business. Their belief in environmental responsibility and shared experiences sets Tŷ Cwch apart in the travel sector, offering something truly rooted, radical, and rewarding.
