Loungers: How Sustainable is it?

Sustainability is at the heart of Loungers. The brand works exclusively with Global Organic Textile Standard certified organic cotton, ensuring the cotton used is grown without synthetic fertilisers or toxic pesticides, and that it meets the International Labour Organization’s labour standards.

To grow the cotton, organic farming methods, such as crop rotation and companion planting, naturally build soil fertility and help lock carbon dioxide into the soil, supporting efforts to mitigate climate change.

The textiles are made in Portugal, renowned for brushed cotton. The factory they work with is a small-scale manufacturer that shares the brand’s ethical and sustainable values. Each garment is handmade with care, and communication is open and collaborative.  The founder visits the manufacturers at least once a year, often twice, to maintain strong relationships and ensure ethical practices remain central to production.

To reduce waste, Loungers also incorporates recycled and rewoven yarns from production scraps, which would otherwise contribute to greenhouse gas emissions through burning.

In keeping with their efforts to reduce environmental impact, they have eliminated plastic from their buttons. Instead, they choose Corozo, a natural, hard-wearing material sourced from the nuts of the Tagua tree in Ecuador. This material not only supports sustainable forestry but also provides economic stability for local communities, reducing the pressure to cut down rainforests.

All packaging is made from recycled materials and is fully recyclable, including eco-friendly tissue paper printed with soya ink and recycled paper stickers. Boxes and bags are crafted from wood pulp sourced from sustainable forests, and packaging is purchased through Raja, a company that donates to a charity supporting women through avocado farming education.

Beyond materials and production, the company is committed to giving back. Each year, the brand designs a special pair of Loungers in collaboration with a charity, donating £10 from every sale. This year, they are proudly supporting the Matt Hampson Foundation.
