Life Happens Skin Rescue: What is it?

Life happens, doesn’t it?

As a consultant clinical psychologist, founder of Life Happens Skin Rescue, Dr. Cheryl Rezek, is particularly aware of that. She strongly believes we are mind and body – not mind or body – and need an integrated approach to life and living. So, Life Happens Skin Rescue was born.

Dr. Rezek says: “We know that there is a clear skin-gut-brain link, so we are a great deal more interlinked as systems than traditional interventions would like us to believe.

“Perhaps my background of having to take conditions seriously and providing the most appropriate intervention was the grounding for my formulating products with which people could feel safe, in as safe as anyone with an allergy can feel.  Enormous care has been taken to exclude ingredients that may run a small risk of a reaction.”

Allergen- and nut-free skincare

Did you know there’s a difference between allergen-free and ‘hypoallergenic’? The former means each product has been safety checked via the CPSR (Cosmetic Product Safety Report) as containing no allergens. The latter means low in allergens.

Life Happens Skin Rescue’s entire range is allergen- and nut-free. This means common oils such as apricot kernel, sweet almond oil, argan oil and even plum or tomato oil have been excluded. Butters such as babassu have also been left out for the same reason. Dr. Rezek has also designed the products without using essential oils or infused oils as these can also lead to reactions.

Plus, the whole range is water-free, which we think is important at Live Frankly. This means the products are also free from preservatives, phthalates, paraffin, skin irritants and fragrances.

So, what’s actually in Life Happen’s Skin Rescue products?

The products are made predominantly from upcycled seed oils. Some of them contain zinc oxide and others shea butter (which is actually from a tree nut, but there has never been an official report of it causing an allergic reaction, especially if it’s refined. However, those with a latex allergy shouldn’t use products that contain it.).

The range is designed to help repair, renew and restore a damaged skin barrier, but also to protect it from becoming further damaged or compromised.

A key product is the Skin Relief & Renewal Body & Scalp Oil. It’s a premium product made from carefully selected oils that are soothing, nourishing and easily absorbed. It is truly multifunctional and works well on dry, itchy skin, eczema and psoriasis-prone skin, menopausal skin, post-pregnancy skin and sensitive, damaged skin. Plus, as the name suggests, it’s an excellent scalp oil, too.

In fact, all the products are multifunctional and intentionally designed to be used across all genders, age and purpose. Except for the Beard and Face Oil, this is, which was designed with men in mind.

Dr. Rezek says: “Men too have sensitive or damaged skin, and they have allergies, but there’s little reference to this with men’s products. I think it’s important that men are included in this conversation.”

The Life Happens Skin Rescue range has won 12 awards so far, with two Editor’s Choice Awards and 9 Free From Skincare Awards.

Life Happens Skin Rescue: How sustainable is it?

The ingredients are sourced from small businesses that are known for their premium products and ethical sourcing, such as Aromantics and INKY. All the oils and butters are upcycled; the oils are upcycled from seeds which otherwise would be thrown away, and the butters are from the seeds of fruit or trees.

The containers and bottles are aluminium and glass which are both reusable and recyclable.

Orders are sent via Royal Mail or personally delivered by Dr. Rezek, if they are within a reasonable distance. Don’t be surprised if they are delivered in random packaging, Dr. Rezek reuses packaging from parcels she’s received in order to reduce waste.

The issue of waste extends to how Dr. Rezek makes and markets her products as multifunctional.

Dr. Rezek says: “This is an important factor for me as I believe there is an enormous amount of waste and hype around needing to use a different product for every issue.”

The Acne Face Cleansing Oil works in tandem with the the Acne Face Oil. They can be used by anyone whether or not they have acne. The Zinc & Camellia balm is great on eczema-prone skin, acne spots, burns, sunburn, rashes, bites, skin irritations, wound-healing. And the same goes for the Baby Barrier Balm (an alternative to Sudocrem), which serves a similar function but it contains a lower percentage of zinc. The Lip Rescue can be used on the lips, inside the nostrils as a barrier to pollen inhalation, on cuticles, on dry patches on the face… and we’re sure you can find more uses!
