Where to buy organic and free-range turkey this Christmas: 7 British farms and suppliers

This year reportedly marks the 500th anniversary of turkeys being brought to Britain from North America. However, it was a few hundred years before it became a Christmas table staple, with a popular historical story being that Henry VIII was the first monarch to eat it.

As is often the way, following a rise in popularity comes a fall. Nowadays, turkey is gaining something of a reputation for being dry and overrated. But, what if all turkey wasn’t made equal? I’ve been writing about turkey at Christmas for a decade now, and I’m writing this fresh from visiting turkeys at Fosse Meadows farm, so I have some pretty interesting insights to share with you.

The first one is, did you know you can stack the odds in your favour for serving up a succulent bird by choosing the right turkey? How the bird was reared can make all the difference to both flavour and cooking quality, quite simply because you get out what you put in.

“The first thing to look for is a slower-growing heritage breed,” advises Nick Ball, co-founder of Fosse Meadows. A Norfolk Black, Bronze or Bourbon Red that has been grown to full maturity creates a completely different eating experience to a faster-growing breed such as Broad Breasted White.

Free-range turkey:

Then you want it to be genuinely free-range, at least. Free-range doesn’t tell you anything about breed, stocking density, feed or how long the birds are reared, which is why you need to dig a bit deeper into these claims. Free-range at Fosse Meadows, for example, means the turkey has had access to pasture and has made the most of this. “Turkeys will be outside all the time, even in the rain, if you let them,” says Ball. Indeed, they were outside when we arrived, loudly followed us around and pecked at us with curiosity the whole time we were with them.

Organic turkey:

‘Organic’ is also a great option. It’s essentially genuinely free-range with the additional security of knowing the turkeys are fed 100% organic feed and with additional, strict requirements regarding animal welfare and how long the birds are reared for.

Regenerative turkey:

‘Regenerative’ can be a good indication of a great farm, but it can also be little more than a marketing term, make sure you find out the breed, if the bird was free-range and also at what age it was killed. These will tell you more about how it was farmed than the word ‘regenerative’.

Higher-Welfare turkey:

A farm, brand or supermarket simply claiming ‘higher-welfare’ can raise more questions than it does answers; ‘higher than what?’ being the main one. We need more specific information than that. Again, you want to know the breed, if the bird was free-range and what age it was killed, if you can.

Of course this is not always easy information to find out. So, we’ve done the research on where can you buy some of the best-reared British organic and free-range turkeys this Christmas. Here are some farms we have visited or have, at the very least, had detailed conversations with the farmers and suppliers about their methods. The difference is clear on the plate: richer, juicier, and more satisfying. These turkeys prove that ethical farming doesn’t just feel better, in our experience it tastes better too.

Why we rate Fosse Meadows Free-Range Bronze slow-grown Turkey (and Cockerel)

Fosse Meadows is a fourth-generation farm selling free-range turkeys and cockerels. It’s celebrating its 16th year of offering slow-grown-to-maturity Bronze turkey this year, too. We visited them last month, and saw for ourselves that they keep their turkeys in small flocks to promote natural behaviour, give them loads of room to roam in diverse meadows, and feed them an additive-free cereal diet. They have an abattoir onsite, which is practically unheard in today’s world. It means they can take responsibility for the whole of the bird’s life, from beginning to end.

A Fosse Meadows cockerel can be a great, cheaper alternative to a turkey, especially if you’re cooking for 5- 10 people as they range in size from 3.5kg – 5.5kg. Essentially, they are grown for longer than chicken (almost five months) and so offer juicier, bolder, and more generous meat, with a rich gamey flavour.

Walters rears its turkeys on the Berkshire Downs, where they roam freely outdoors during the day, feed on high quality organic cereals, and return to spacious straw bedded barns at night. The birds are dry plucked and hand finished on the farm, then hung for at least seven days. This is considered to be best practice when it comes to turkeys, but is not very common anymore because it takes a lot of time.

Helen Browning’s Organic also offer a whole supporting cast of pork and beef dishes, from gammon and sausage meat to pre-cooked beef to keep you going for Boxing Day and the hungry days that follow. They even have curry sauce for leftover turkey. All certified organic.

Why we rate Beacon Farms free-range and heritage breed turkey

Beacon Farms sources their turkeys from the Slade family, who have been raising bronze turkeys on Rosamondford Farm in Devon for around 80 years. Living a proper free-range life, these turkeys roam and forage on grass pastures, are fed locally-sourced wheat and vegetables and are grown slowly without artificial additives or growth promoters. Once processed, they are dry-plucked and game-hung on the farm using time-honoured methods to enrich the flavour and tenderise the meat. Beacon Farm turkeys were awarded Gold by both Food Drink Devon and Taste of the West 2024/25.

To accompany their turkeys, Beacon Farms are also offering handmade nitrate- and nitrite-free Pigs in Blankets from a combination of woodland and pasture raised pork producers. Or if you’re looking for alternative or additional meats for the festive period, they suggest Rib of Beef from their own herd of Ruby Red Devons, Venison wellington and orchard-reared Goose.

Why we rate Riverford’s organic turkey

Riverford also opt for traditional Bronze breed turkeys, a slow-growing traditional breed that gives rich, juicy meat with an intense natural flavour. The turkeys are reared by the Malseed family, at Frenchbeer Farm in Dartmoor. They spend their first five to six weeks in a barn under heat lamps then they go out to grass. At night, they are bedded down with fresh straw in the sheds for protection. The Malseeds have been farming turkeys for 30 years, so know how to rear a bird that really delivers on flavour. Christine Malseed describes them as “self-basting”; at full maturity, they have built up thin layers of fat between their layers of muscle. “This ensures the meat will be tender and succulent all the way through when cooked,” she says.

You could order your whole organic Christmas feast from Riverford, from Brussel Sprouts to Christmas pudding. They make cooking easy with festive recipe kits. And they even deliver festive fizz to your door.

There’s not a lot you have to do to ensure your guests enjoy a juicy bird with crispy skin.

Because they are reared by the same producer, both turkeys are reared to similar welfare standards. Their feed differs, as the organic birds are only fed organic feed. Both are dry-plucked by hand and hung and dry-aged for at least seven days.
