Yala Jewellery: What is it?

Yala Jewellery is a contemporary jewellery brand with empowerment at its core.

The collection, inspired by modern Africa and handmade by a talented community of artisans in Kenya, features distinct textures and intricate, elegant and creatively geometric designs.

Yala was founded by Audrey Migot-Adholla who was born in Kenya and is now based in Bristol, and is named after the town in Kenya where her late grandmother lived.

Channelling her passion for accessories into Yala Jewellery, Audrey set out to celebrate African culture through jewellery design while helping to support skilled Kenyan artisans through creating financial opportunities.

Yala jewellery was the winner of “Jewellery Brand of the Year” in the 2019 Sustainable Lifestyle Awards, and it’s no surprise why.

Yala Jewellery: How sustainable is it?

Yala is built on strong social and environmental values.

Yala’s mission is to financially empower artisans working in the informal sector in Kenya. Today, Audrey works directly with over 150 artisans in Kenya, helping to ensure they receive fair wages (triple the daily wage for jewellery artisans in Kenya), safe and healthy work environments, and the deserved recognition for their talents.

Establishing an open and transparent supply chain, Yala maintains a personable and trusting relationship with their artisans by visiting and communicating with them regularly. They facilitate weekly workshop visits from team members based in Kenya to ensure the designers have a safe, happy work environment to create their jewellery.

A testament to their ethics, Yala Jewellery was the first jewellery brand to be certified a B-Corp in the UK – a certification that measures a company’s social and environmental purpose.

Sustainable sourcing is also at the heart of their brand. Yala uses raw materials that are all recycled, re-used or reclaimed. They work mostly with recycled brass – an ethical alternative to gold.

To further minimise waste, Yala operates a reclamation program where items that are no longer wanted can be returned to be recycled into another beautiful piece.

All items are delivered in eco-friendly packaging, made up of reusable, recyclable or compostable components designed to reduce waste. Both the shipping box and reusable product box are made from recyclable FSC-certified board and printed with vegetable-based inks. Their ring boxes are made up of recyclable cardboard with a biodegradable 100% natural, undyed wool lining. The storage pouches are 100% cotton and biodegradable, so can be reused or added it to your household compost.

For every purchase made, Yala invest in offsetting 100% of the carbon emissions created during shipping through their partner EcoCart. Their ultimate goal is to achieve carbon neutrality.
