BIRDSONG: WHAT IS IT?

Birdsong collections are all about genuinely original clothes. Think bright colours, edgy silhouettes and original prints made from natural fabrics.

Striped dresses, block colour jumpsuits and hand printed trousers are designed for women who like their clothes to be as visionary and thought-provoking as they are.

Soft, organic t-shirts with suggestively placed exotic fruit; chunky knitwear  in muted autumnal tones of mustard, fawn and plums; there’s everything you need to take you from mates to dates, and it’s all expertly made to last by women in the UK.

BIRDSONG: HOW SUSTAINABLE IS IT?

Birdsong’s mantra is one we couldn’t be more on board with: ‘No Sweatshops, No Photoshop’.

Addressing the issue that many women in poorer countries are the ones paying the price for cheap high street clothes, the brand refuses to use factories that pay below minimum wage and employs the skilled hands of women’s groups and charities instead. These female makers face barriers to employment in the UK, but Birdsong pays them a fair wage.

As a result, Birdsong’s founders know every woman in the supply chain. Birdsong’s jumpers are hand knitted by Knit & Knatter, an elderly women’s group in Bradbury and a social community where women can socialise while working with a purpose. The sales revenue has gone into renovating their community centre and therapy room, with remaining profits going towards other small luxuries.

The brand’s 100% organic cotton sweatshirts and tees are hand-painted by women’s charity Mohila Creations. Based in London, Mohila is a group of low-income migrant women who work for a London living wage. This opportunity gives the women a creative social environment to work in while their children are at school.

Most Birdsong garments are hand cut, sewn and finished by Tower Hamlets-based social enterprise Stitches in Time. Tower Hamlets has the highest rate of child poverty in the UK and these creative projects are designed to empower individuals and build strong and inclusive communities. All the charities Birdsong works with provide training, living wage work, and emotional support.

Finally, all their orders are packed in recycled, eco-friendly packaging by adults with learning disabilities in Camden. Tick, tick and tick.
